Mahatma Gandhi: The Guiding Light

Father of the Nation – Leader of India’s freedom movement through non-violence.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known to the world as Mahatma, or "Great Soul," began his journey as a quiet, unassuming lawyer. It was in South Africa, facing racial discrimination, that the fire of his conviction was ignited. He forged a new weapon for the oppressed: Satyagraha, or "truth force." It was a form of resistance rooted not in violence, but in unwavering non-cooperation and civil disobedience.

Returning to India, he transformed the struggle for independence. Clad in a simple khadi loincloth, he walked among the poorest, urging them to find strength in unity and peace. His Dandi March, a 240-mile walk to the sea to protest the British salt tax, was a masterful act of political theater that captured the world's imagination. He showed that the power of a united people, armed only with their conscience, could shake the foundations of the mightiest empire. His life became his message: that true change comes not from the fist, but from the heart.
